May Day 2012 -- Defining Moment for
Canada
The Role of Leading Society Has Become
the Responsibility of the Working Class
Hamilton steelworkers
rally on Parliament Hill, May Day 2011.
Celebrate the day
of international working class solidarity by advancing a program to
resolve the problems facing society in favour of the people, not the
rich!
On this May Day 2012, the Communist Party of Canada
(Marxist-Leninist) sends its warmest militant May Day greetings to all
workers and their allies at home and abroad and their fighting
organizations. We salute all the working and oppressed peoples
everywhere who are defending their rights, fighting to
uphold their dignity and sovereignty and to find a way forward to build
new societies which uphold the rights of all on a modern basis.
On the occasion of May Day 2012, the most important
problem to be taken up for solution is for the working class to take up
its independent politics and program.
All over the country the working people are under
tremendous pressure to wage only defensive battles and depend on others
to represent them politically. But the workers are breaking out of this
old way of doing things. They are taking measures to hold governments
to account themselves by working out programs
which will contribute to resolving the crisis in their favour, not in
favour of the rich whose imposition of monopoly dictate onto the
peoples everywhere is leading to devastating nation-wrecking,
impoverishment, wars of aggression and occupation.
As the monopoly dictate reveals its brutality and
irrationality more every day, the workers are saying Enough! There is
an alternative!
The lessons we draw from the struggles of the past year
is that the only way out of the present situation is for the working
class to assume the role of leading the society by exercising control
over the decisions which affect their lives. We call on the fighting
workers across the country to use the strength of their
numbers and organization to wage the struggle with this aim in the
forefront.
The workers and oppressed peoples all over the world are
feeling the full weight of the deepening crisis of the monopoly
capitalist system and the demands of the international financial
oligarchy and its oligopolies which dominate all sectors of the
economy. Their only concern for society is their pursuit of maximum
profits, no matter what gets auctioned off or who and what get
destroyed. Governments use the full weight of the state, its agencies
and revenues to meet the demands of the monopolies and financiers. In
the name of prosperity, austerity, eliminating deficits and debts,
national security, unity in diversity, democracy,
human rights and many other high ideals which they misuse, they seek to
achieve their aim. Anyone who resists this dictate is criminalized and
accused of being a security risk. Because of this, the workers are
facing massive economic insecurity, unemployment and downward pressure
on their wages, working conditions
and integrity. In addition, the cutbacks to social programs make life
increasingly difficult for the people from all walks of life. Today,
the only claims on society which governments recognize are those of the
speculators and money lenders. When it comes to the claims of the
working people every bogus excuse is
given as to why it is not possible.
In the past year, the workers have stepped up their
opposition to this self-serving direction the financial oligarchs,
monopolies and governments in their service have set for society. Only
the working class has an interest to defend the guiding principle that
the society must provide for all. The Hamilton steelworkers
set the tone one year ago with their May First Rally on Parliament Hill
where they gave the call to Stop Harper! Canadians Stand as One in
Defence of Public Right! Manufacturing Yes! Nation-Wrecking No! In the
face of the attacks of the monopolies and the federal and provincial
governments the workers are
fed the fairy tale that nothing can be done about the crisis except to
accept it and, willingly or unwillingly, "share its burden." The steel
workers called on workers from coast to coast to oppose the ideological
defeatism and passivity the ruling elites and their media seek to
impose on them and set their own course.
In this way, organized workers everywhere are figuring
out an alternative for themselves by taking a militant stand that No
Means No! No austerity! No privatization of social services and social
programs! No to making the people pay so as to pay the rich! The
working class must constitute itself the nation and
vest sovereignty in the people!
The contradictions on the world scale are sharpening at
an ever increasing pace as the monopolies and imperialist countries in
their service strive for domination. Today the rule of law at home and
abroad is destroyed and anarchy has been raised to authority. This
means that no monopoly accepts to have any
other above it and they all do as they please, with devastating
consequences. Governments simply remove any barriers in their way and
criminalize any opposition and they too vie with one another for
domination.
The situation is way beyond unacceptable. The workers
must continue to rise up and stand as one to demand a rule of law which
upholds the public interest. Such a rule of law must subordinate
monopoly interests to the public interest. In the absence of this
stand, life is grim; the future is bleak. But by taking
this stand, the prospects open up and a bright future can be foreseen.
This May First 2012, let us work hard to increase our
awareness that the role of leadership in society has become the
responsibility of the working class. Let the working class celebrate
its latent and actual power to deprive the owners of capital and their
political representatives of their power to deprive the actual
producers of their rights, turn their lives upside down, wreck the
socialized economy and embroil them in wars of aggression and
occupation.
This May First 2012, let workers pledge to improve the
quality of their defence organizations and resistance by ridding their
thinking of all the old dogma forced into our brains by owners of
capital and their anti-social traditions and outmoded notions of
exploitation and class privilege. Let all workers and their allies
pledge to organize to build the new with their own thinking and outlook.
The working class is the only social force capable of
establishing a new equilibrium based on recognition of the rights of
workers and the general interests of society. Across the country and
internationally let us step up the work to uphold the dignity of labour
in actions with analysis, oppose the dangers facing
humanity of more wars of aggression and occupation and even more
devastating fascist regimes to those defeated in the twentieth century.
Throughout the world the working and oppressed peoples
are rising up to face the situation. Our future lies in standing as one
to defend the rights of all! One for All and All for One!
Workers and Oppressed Peoples of the
World, Unite!
Long Live May First!
